One ESL student self-assessment checklist for a systematic processing of written work (aimed at schools and universities should be used before).
Writing is difficult for beginners and twice in a foreign language. My checklist covers the basics. This site was developed in South Korea, at Honam University, but also be adapted for writers around the world.
Korean English teachers (and the droves of instant ESL teachers) do not have the time and often lack the ability toedit (correct and critique), written by the students'. This is a fact of life in overcrowded schools, colleges and universities. Drafting of written work is so time consuming, because the quality is produced by students is often very low. Teachers can not expect students to guess their way through the editing process. Let us all be systematic.
1st Use spell check or dictionary.

5th Check sex / gender: My mother is a hard worker.
6 Check the data item (prepositions) and article words (in, on, under, a, i, a, a, l ').
7th tense: present, past, had the future (or past general do not have). Simplify: Avoid and had, as is more complicated.
8th Eliminate redundancy: .. For example, E 'was a big, big, huge, hugeHouse.
9th Shorten sentences: Avoid long walks statements, old fashion and can be confusing.
10th Avoid overloading of a word. Check the thesaurus and avoid that hole.
11 Avoid too much generality. Give details. Enter your data into useful compositions.
Incorrect: I have a brother and two sisters.
Right: I have three siblings, Jennifer 2, Cindy 5, Bob, and 14 years.
12 ° Their composition (history / report) must have logical flow. Check logical order (see # 11later).
Use 13 points and lines. Headings give a logical order and flow. They are like an artist or a sketch of Movie Maker's storyboard lines.
14th to avoid ambiguity (words with 2 or more meanings). Ambiguous words / terms that confuse your readers. For example .. The article is one thing and a story in a magazine.
15th Think of your readers, the public if you read their work. Who read it? I'm confused?
16th think the tone or message. If the lettershould be funny or serious?
17th Korean grammar is very different from English, students can build is not common grammatical English sentences, when they read the translations, listen and use Phase 2
For example:
Korean: Ad-u-en, Kim du Gay Jusa bap-yo.
Step # 1 Direct translation: Mister, two rolls of laughed at me.
Step # 2 of English grammar: Lord, give me rice rolls (please).
Korean students are confused if you try to go directly fromcontinue to # 2.
Poetry often breaks all the rules, to ignore the above!
